To start the year off we wanted students to have an opportunity to get to know their fellow scientists and learn to communicate with one another through an engineering design challenge. This opening challenge was designed for kids to practice their new jobs, begin drawing diagrams,and to learn to compromise and communicate with one another under pressure. It was also to introduce students to the idea of failure. Failure in this class is not a lack of success, but instead an opportunity to learn and grow from your mistakes. For this challenge we asked students to build the tallest free-standing tower they could using the following materials and time:
