In this first unit students learn all about living and nonliving things. They learn about what living things need to survive and how the adapt when their environment changes. They spend time investigating what plants need to grow as well as the parts of plants. We also take a closer look at animals and their young.
Now that we have learned all about plants, I asked students how aniamls and plants are alike. Students shared that animals need many of the same things that plants do.

Now that we've had a chance to examine many different types of seeds, I asked the students how they think seeds travel from one place to another. Some students said that seeds can travel when the wind pushes them. Other students said seeds can travel when humans move them from one place to another. Through a lab we had in class and a short video clip we watched we learned that seeds can travel in many ways!
