7. sorting by Color!!!Week of 10/27/13 The students are learning more and more about how we can classify objects. This week we took a closer look at color. They had a chance to sort their bucket of objects as well as crayons, buttons and string. Then students filled out data sheets and drew samples of things they know that matched each color. 6. What does this feel like?Week of 10/22/13
Every week we introduce 4 new textures to the students and provide them with a sample of objects that correspond to the 4 new textures they are learning about. They have been exposed to each of these words in pairs so that they can learn them as opposites. It will help with the recognition of these textures later on in the unit. Students have also had the opportunity to start collecting data on each of these textures. I gave the students a new basket of materials. Students felt each object and then recorded what each object felt like to them. Students have learned the following texture words: hard, soft, bumpy, smooth, rough, flexible, rigid, hot, cold, slippery, prickly, pokey, squishy, flat, wet, dry, sharp, fluffy, furry and rubbery. 5. Getting used to writing! In kindergarten students draw lots of picture to help communicate what they know. We encourage them to start using words as well. These words help us explain our observations as well as sort and classify things into groups. Here are some of the words we have learned so far:
4. Using technology to sort shapes!Week of 10/21/13
We have been integrating a lot of technology into what we do in class. The students have had an opportunity to sort based on size and texture. This week we focused on sorting shapes. Being able to sort and classify objects based on their materials is a very valuable tool. If you would like more practice with sorting, please click on some of the links on the right of the screen!
3. Sorting materials based on their properties!Week of 09/30/13 to the present
In the next few labs students will be sorting objects based on a variety of properties including color, shape, size and texture. Students will be able to classify various objects and learn about different textures such as bumpy, rough, smooth, fluffy, sticky and prickly. We started sorting this week by color and shape.
2. reading about texture!Kindergartners learn that objects have different properties. We complete several labs where students touch and feel different objects to learn what these properties feel like. Here are some of the books that we have read in class to help students learn texture words.
1. Using my sense!Week of 09/16/13 to 09/30/13
Scientists use their sense to make observations. It is very important to make observations about what is going on in the world around you. We complete several labs where we use our sense to identify properties of objects based on what they look like, sound like, feel like, and smell like.
The sense we have been utilizing are
